The New Honda CR-V Beats Out the Toyota RAV4 in Cargo Space, Acceleration, and Ride Quality

  • The Honda CR-V has more cargo space than most compact SUVs, including 39.2 cubic feet with both rows in use and 75.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The Toyota RAV4 has a little less cargo room, offering 38.4 cubic feet with both rows up and 73.4 cubic feet with the rear row folded down.
  • Whether you get one with the 2.4-liter base engine or the optional 1.5-liter turbocharged motor, the Honda CR-V has quicker acceleration than the Toyota RAV4. The CR-V's standard engine produces 184 horsepower and the turbocharged version puts out 190 horsepower. The RAV4 only offers one engine, and it's 2.5-liter engine only makes 176 horsepower. That's not much of a difference on paper, but the CR-V's engines provide noticeably better throttle response and acceleration.
  • The Honda CR-V delivers a poised, comfortable ride, even over bumps in the road. The RAV4 rides fairly smooth on the highway, but the CR-V's ride is a little more responsive and composed than the RAV4.

The Honda CR-V Edges Out the Nissan Rogue in Safety, Legroom, and Power

  • While both the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue were rated as Top Safety Picks by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the CR-V does better in crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The CR-V earned a perfect five out of five stars in front and side crash tests, with a four-star rating in rollover resistance. In comparison, the Rogue scored four out of five stars overall, partly because of the four-star score it received in front impact tests.
  • Both the Nissan Rogue and Honda CR-V have well-built cabins with comfortable seating, the CR-V is a little roomier. The CR-V has 40.4 inches of rear legroom, while the Rogue has only 37.9 inches of legroom for rear passengers.
  • The Honda CR-V has a clear advantage over the Nissan Rogue in terms of power and acceleration. The base CR-V comes with a 184-horsepower 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine, along with an available 1.5-liter 190-horsepower motor that delivers strong acceleration without sacrificing economy. The Rogue has only a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that can feel underpowered at times.
